My Life being Disabled 07/09/07

I woke up 05:30 cleaned my teeth and had a shave. At 06:50 my carers came and dressed me. I went to the dining room and had my breakfast.

At 08:00 my taxi came ( Wheels, 0113 249 9999) and the taxi driver took me to my Work Preparation course run by paulalmond@best-train.com & stuartcockerham@best-train.com at the Belle Isle Foundation email foundation@belle-isle.co.uk excellent conference and training facilities.

I got an appointment to fill my Baclofin pump on 11/10/07 14:30 I phoned to ensure they had booked an ambulance - Yes

Also I got an appointment to see an Occupational Therapist on 11/10/07 15:00 I phoned to tell them I had another appointment. I left a message because she was out.

I summarised the complaints I had with my Care home and found there were 17 still outstanding which were:-

At 08:00 my taxi came ( Wheels, 0113 249 9999) and the taxi driver took me via Allerton Bywater, Great Preston, Swillington, Oulton, Rothwell and Sharpe Lane to my Work Preparation course run by paulalmond@best-train.com & stuartcockerham@best-train.com at the Belle Isle Foundation email foundation@belle-isle.co.uk excellent conference and training facilities. I wasn't happy because most of the roads had speed humps in and my driver didn't slow down !

Hello Mick

I'm really pleased to hear from you and can I first apologise for being so late in getting back to you. I've been doing a lot of running around since Wembley and this is the first chance I have had to really catch up with a lot of my mail.

I was sad to hear the problems you have had with getting a driver for your adapted vehicle which is I am sure something we can help with and I'm also suprised we have not bumped into each other. As well as the work I do with the RLDSA both my husband and myself are keen Bradford Bulls fans and I do a lot of work at Odsal with them.

The feedback from you regarding Wembley was really helpful and I have some good news after meeting with them earlier this week.

First of all the level 5 viewing areas are being phased out with more being available on level 2, this should make sure there is more leg room available without obstruction. Next year there will be 3 lifts operating to bring spectators into Wembley which should prevent the queueing problems a lot of people experienced and also a lot more visible signage is to be added with more facilities available inside and outside the ground.

Your blog is very good by the way, it caught not only my eye but that of a senior member of the Rugby Football League who forwarded it to me.

I am very pleased to hear you are interested in becoming part of the RLDSA, we have grown in number quite a lot over the last few years and are in the process of developing our website which will expand over the coming weeks as I will be a lot less busy with the season coming to a close.

My Disabled Employment Adviser(DEA) phoned to tell me my last day of my Work Preparation course is 18/09/07 but when I checked my diary I found I was attending an Powered Indoor/ Outdoor Wheelchair (EPIOC) training course so the last day is 19/09/07.

I kept looking for jobs

At 12:45 the nurse from my Care home phoned she had been asked if I could attend the hospital tomorrow - YES.....she would get back to me once everythings confirmed.

At 15:30 she phoned back asking me if I could use my car tomorrow - NO because it is the garage tomorrow to fix a fault on the electronics.

When I got home she told me that my hospital appointment was cancelled because there was no transport - no ambulance, the Care home's minibus was broken down, my car was in the garage.... she was going to tell  the hospital and re-arrange my appointment.

At 21:00, as usual, I told a carer that tomorrow I am going to my Work Preparation course and my taxi arrives at 08:00. Can I have a shower. She said later tonight but at 23:50 she came in the television room and said it was too late tonight and she will give me a shower at 06:00 tomorrow.

I phoned Stephen Ashworth who was dealing with my complaint with NHS ref. SA/CJ/2120185 as his PA Caroline Jowett was going to organise a meeting to discuss why I can't get a flexible cystoscopy(kidney investigation) done. Caroline is on maternity leave but Neil is going to investigate and phone me back.

I woke up 05:30 cleaned my teeth and had a shave. At 07:30 my carers had been to wash, dress me and get me up so I buzzed them. At 07:40 they came in and dressed me I went out for my taxi. I didn't have time to wash or have breakfast.

At 07:45 the bus came ( Wheels, 0113 249 9999) and the bus driver took me to my Work Preparation course run by paulalmond@best-train.com & stuartcockerham@best-train.com at the Belle Isle Foundation email foundation@belle-isle.co.uk excellent conference and training facilities. Immediatley I phoned my Social worker to add to my list complaints but she hadn't arrive yet. I asked the receptionist to ask her to phone me urgently.

She phoned at 09:05 she had not got my email, I sent it again. She suggested we met with the management of my Care home to resolve things. I said I would providing it was productive.

I emailed my Social worker....

I tried to phone you earlier and you were not available so I'm sending you a email while it's fresh in my mind.

     Yesterday, at dinnertime the senior nurse said I was not moving and I am staying at Wheldon View. IS THIS TRUE ?


Also, before I contact the police, several of my items (chequebook, bluetooth earpiece, prescription items, electric shaver plug, mints etc.) have gone missing but my room is in a mess I don't know if there stolen or just misplaced. I've tried to contact Michelle she's not available.

At the moment I'm in Leeds every working day (08:00 - 16:30) on a Jobcentre plus course Work Preparation which should get me working again. Because of this I feel outside of the Care set-up and I am not partaking in any of the activities. Can you please tell me what's happening. Am I going to Dearnevale ? Is it possible to live independently ? Is it possible to live in Supported Living ?

I apologise for being a pain but I feel fed-up and feel very low.

I woke up at 05:00, I didn't have a shower because there was only one carer on duty.

On Saturday I went to the New Wembley Stadium here is my report which I have sent to the Disability Rights Commision and my MP.

My Life being Disabled – New Wembley

On Saturday 25^th August 2007 I went to Wembley Stadium to watch the Rugby League Carnegie Challenge Cup Final. The two teams playing were, the first French team, Catalans Dragons v

St Helens

with a kick off time of 3 pm.

We set off at 08:00 and with two rest breaks we arrived at Wembley at 13:00. I had arranged parking for my adapted car in the Green section on Olympic Way. Although a space was allocated to me we were directed into the next available space. Next, find the disabled toilets/disabled entrance(s), we could not find a disabled toilet outside so we found the disabled entrance. With a very long queue we found out this was the only entrance for the 310 wheelchair users and personal assistants that had to use the lift. Eventually we got to the front of the queue but my catheter bag had already overflowed.

On the 5^th level we found the disabled toilet and a steward with the RADAR key, plenty of room. We went outside because the weather was very sunny and hot. We had a cheeseburger and a coffee which cost £6.50 each and the food was rubbish. Inside there was plenty of room around our area my only complaint was all the disabled areas were situated at the front of each row and in my case with my paralysed leg that I can not bend it I prefer my area to be at the back of row (Old Trafford). My view was limited because of the crash barriers in front.

The match was exciting in the first half but

St Helens

wore Catalan down in the second half. The final score was Catalan Dragons 8 St Helens 30. After the presentation we headed to my car via the disabled toilet. The car par was in chaos there was no stewards and we eventually got out after 30 minutes.

In general, consider that this is the National Stadium our approach to the car park via the road and industrial area was poor. The access for the disabled was poor, the food was expensive, my view was poor and after the event there was no catering. I would give 2/5 and hope that for the Olympics in 2012

Friday morning - no shower.

Agreed with Paul I would start my training with the Beginners Course for SAGA LINE 50 v11 Financial Controller.

After speaking to Paul my DEA wanted to speak with me. Because of my workload she's authorised another 15 days of training. That should take me to 15/09/07 without absences (e.g. driving lesson, hospital etc.).
